Becky: I just have a problem with redefining marriage. It is what it is. An apple is an apple not a pear. We dont redefine what an apple is to include pears or oranges. Why cant they find another word for it like legal domestic partnership or what ever they choose? Marriage already has a definition so love who you want but PICK ANOTHER NAME!!!!!!!!!
Me: I saw your comment on a post by George Takei about redefining marriage to include or not to include same sex couples and I just have one thing to point out. I'm only a 19 year old college student, and it appears you are quite a bit older than me, so in your life I hope you have had at least some of the learning experiences I have had. Let's think back to our elementary or middle school history class, shall we? Do you remember the controversy about abolishing slavery? About allowing Mexicans in the early 1900's to be considered citizens? About Asian immigrants during world war 2? What is one thing about all of these situations that just did not work? I'll tell you: the notion of separate but equal.
Domestic partnerships, civil unions, these are nice and give same sex couples some rights, however there is quite the laundry list of rights and privileges that are not available to same sex couples. In addition to that, separation with 'equality' still CLEARLY defines one group as separate from another, which allows society to view that group however they want, which in most cases is less than equal.
Your comment, whether you knew it or not, fully reinforces 'separate but equal,' which has time and time again proven to not work and end terribly.
Also, take some time to consider this: At the founding of our nation, 'all men created equal' ruled that to be a citizen you must be a white male property owner. This then changed many times, most popularly in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which defined a citizen again as a white male property owner, but also included Mexicans.
Again, the definition of a citizen was changed when Japanese and Chinese immigrants were recognized as 'Indians' along with Native Americans to keep them from being citizens.
As you should know, citizenship is defined by a different set of rules today. However, following your concept of not redefining common societal definitions, you would still be considered property of either your father or your husband. You would not be allowed to own land, any money, and in the case of a divorce, your children would be separated from you and custody given to the father, and you would, once again, be considered property of your father. I hope that I have proven the point I intend to prove, that gay, lesbian, transgendered, and bisexual (and anywhere in between) men and women in this nation who wish to be married be allowed the same rights as heterosexual men and women, and under the same name. Because frankly, to believe in separate but equal is just flat out naive.
